I first met Helena back in December during the Winter Village celebration in downtown Easton. She warmly welcomed me into her space, proudly showing me around and sharing how Metropolitan Ink & Beauty Bar came together alongside her daughters, Grace and Liv.

With a bright smile, she spoke about the dedication, sacrifices, and hard work they’ve poured into building the business and bringing their vision to life. Helena has been in the beauty industry since the 1980s, with a brief pause along the way to focus on raising her family.

With decades of knowledge in skincare and the perspective of a hardworking mother who understands the importance of self-care, Helena and I sat down to talk about her journey — one rooted in experience, resilience, and heart.

We met for a second time so I can meet the whole team behind Metropolitan ink and Beauty Bar.

Meet Helena

Rosa: Hi, Helena! How are you?

Helena Petrossian: Hi again! I’m doing well!

Rosa: That’s awesome! Can you tell us quickly who you are and what you do?

Helena: So, my name is Helena, and I am a licensed esthetician. I’ve been in the aesthetics business longer than I care to say…since the eighties! So, I love skincare. It’s evolved so much in the past twenty-five years, even in the past ten years. And, I just keep learning as I go.

A New Chapter

Rosa: Awesome! Did this studio feel like reopening a chapter or writing a completely new one?

Helena: Writing a completely new one! Because, like I said, things have changed in the skincare industry. But then also working with my family is a completely new concept for me and I like it!

Rosa: Awesome! What is it like working alongside your daughters as adults?

Helena: It’s great because we all have our own personalities and they both have their own ideas and they really help me out a lot with things– because they’re much younger– they’re fresher and they know a lot more about how to market things.

The Meaning Behind Skincare

Rosa: Last time we talked, you described your room as a Zen place. What do you think women are really coming in for? For skincare or something deeper?

Helena: I think that they do come in for skincare, but also just self-preservation. So many women are so busy between raising a family and working. They have to wear so many different hats. They come in here for an hour or so, they get to just completely relax. They could sleep if they want. They can talk if they want! They can do whatever they want to do, but it’s their time.

Rosa: What emotional transformation do you see happen during a facial?

Helena: I can just feel sometimes people just release, like they just feel like they can exhale. And they relax and their bodies just calm down and their minds more importantly.

Decades in the Industry

Rosa: You’ve told me that the industry has changed a lot since the 1980s, so, has the clientele changed at all?

Helena: Clientele really hasn’t changed. I mean, women always want to look good. They want to take care of their skin. A lot of applications have changed. The products have changed, but the end result is you want to look good. You want to feel good no matter what age you are, right?

Rosa: Amazing! What do you do that sometimes younger aestheticians overlook that you’ve learned with time?

Helena: I think, and this comes with age, you learn how to speak to people. You don’t speak to everyone the same. Depending upon the person’s age, even their culture, even their background, different people just require different ways of speaking to them and different ways of communicating.

Looking Ahead

Rosa: When you imagine Metropolitan Ink and Beauty Bar, five years from now, what do you see?

Helena: I hope to see a very busy, bustling salon and tattoo studio. I think our name is getting out there. And the longer we’re here, hopefully the more people learn about us and come on in and give us a try.

Where to Find Helena

Supporting Local Means Supporting Community

Supporting local businesses like Metropolitan Ink & Beauty Bar means supporting real people, experience, and a women-owned, family-run space rooted in Easton. Built on trust, care, and intention, it’s a place where skincare becomes both self-care and restoration.

As part of this three-part mini series, I’m highlighting the women behind the work — Liv, Helena, and Grace. In this feature, we focus on Helena, whose decades of experience and calming approach to skincare create a space where clients can truly relax, reset, and care for themselves.
